The 6th World Youth Congress held prior to the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio Brazil gave young people from 110 countries to produced a 20 point youth solution document to be presented to Government Delegations as they arrive into the Earth Summit - and also be taken home and localized by youth delegates.

The youth gathering took place at Sitio des Pedras, a venue surrounded by a rainforest in the heart of Riocentro. You will see here the opening message, shared by Alec Loorz, 18, of USA which set the platform for 300 youth leaders from all over the world.

This is our generation!

I think this is the motivation that young people need to own the present and the future that is best for all. “The only way that we can solve climate change or any of the issues that we (young people) people are facing is going to the core of the way we are thinking, they way we relate to each other, the way we relate to our planet ... we need to remember how it truly means to be human, how it feels to be alive, how it feels to be connected with each other, to be connected with the earth, that’s what it is about...” “...I really believe that we can be the generation that finally can say enough is enough. No longer can we be treated as pawns in this game of money and power; no longer will we allow our future to be gambled away. Our generation can be the ones to finally break free from this sickness that has been hurting our people for so long. We can be the generation to unite together cross cultural backgrounds ... and complain to the world that we are indeed the change we are waiting for and we are waiting no longer...” The WYC was not a regular gathering of international delegates. The way the Congress was structured and organized was also not anything fancy. Youth representatives had to endure being disconnected from their homes, sort of (as we live in a world where we depend on computers and cell phones) as there was extremely limited access to these resources. There were a number of issues that discouraged effective participation throughout the duration of the meet because of the very messy “camping environment.” So much can be said about the things that were not right. But the best part of the Congress was that it achieved its purpose – to come out with 20 Solution for a Sustainable future for all. And now the challenge is to make the solutions our own and put them into action. How we make it happen is all up to us.
