What would you do if you were ever in similar situations?

Sofia is still reluctant to go for a pregnancy test to confirm or a HIV test to see what necessary steps she should take. These feelings of worthlessness have clouded her judgement and depressed her so much that she doesn’t even want to interact anymore. We find out what her next move will be in this next episode.

Amina has been nothing but a good friend to Karis as he dealt with his positive status and the fact that his livelihood was seemingly over. How does he deal with it and what can he learn from the young Amina who seems to have her life in control despite the fact that she’s also HIV positive?

Fally’s music career seems to be on the rise and he’s about to receive an offer he can’t refuse. So what will it be for his love for Sofia?

Episode 10. Sofia won’t tell Fally about the baby because she’s not sure who the father is. She won’t test because she doesn’t want to know her status or bear the weight of knowing her baby may be at risk. Do you think Sofia would benefit from taking an HIV test?

Episode 10. Sofia won’t tell Fally about the baby because she’s not sure who the father is. She won’t test because she doesn’t want to know her status or bear the weight of knowing her baby may be at risk. Do you think Sofia would benefit from taking an HIV test?

It would definitely benefit her and the baby.

Avoidance is a common coping mechanism. Except you’re not really coping. You’re just putting off the inevitable and you’ll eventually have to deal with it.

Take Sofia for example. A baby is eventually going to show even if she doesn’t want to accept her pregnancy due to her doubt about the father – and her despair over the rape. Not only will the baby show, but it will in due time be born. Then what?

I think the most sensible decision she can make in her position is to go and get tested. HIV can be transmitted from a HIV-positive woman to her child either during pregnancy, or during labour and delivery, or by breastfeeding. However, the risks of mother-to-child transmission of HIV can be reduced to below 1% by the appropriate use of HIV treatment during pregnancy and labour, by having a caesarean delivery if you have a high detectable viral load, and (when safe alternatives are available) by not breastfeeding.

Whatever her status, she’ll be better placed to make decisions concerning her own health and that of her baby’s. She will be giving herself the opportunity to secure a healthy life for her child, especially if it turns out that she’s positive. This is because with the correct intervention, it’s highly likely that she will be able to avoid the mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

Armed with the right information and correct medical care, Sofia doesn’t have to worry about her future or that of her child’s.

But the first step is knowledge. Then actually taking a step. Share the poll.. Take it on the link above

Shuga Radio Episode 8 aired last night, Sofia opened up to Fally and Amina about her rape and Karis got caught slipping by his Shuga Mama. Have a listen and take our poll

Source: http://mtvshuga.com/2012/08/shuga-radio-episode-8-review/

Shuga Radio Episode 8 was a roller coaster of an episode for most of the Shuga Radio characters. Most of them have had heavy revelations and have had to confront huge issues in their lives.

First up, it seems that settling down is just not an option for the smooth operator Karis as he randomly picks up a girl by the side of the road as he is driving around in town.

After some charming persuasion the two find a secluded area to ‘have a good time’ and while they’re in the middle of it all, his ‘Shuga Mama’ Riziki pulls up and knocks on the window.

Busted, being the owner of the vehicle, Riziki is incensed that Karis could do this to her but things take a turn for the worse when it turns out that the girl in the car is actually Riziki’s daughter! Needless to say Karis has been dumped.

Meanwhile Feruz has hooked Fally up with Angelo and Kipepeo – the two musicians from Shuga: Love, Sex, Money who love his sound over in Nairobi, it seems Fally is blowing up – gigs are picking up and he’s fast becoming a star.

However Fally can’t enjoy his success however, because he knows something is wrong with Sofia and she won’t talk to him. All Sofia wanted a week ago was a bigger place they could call their own, but in the past few days she has totally changed and kept to herself.

As Fally, Sofia and Amina go house hunting though, it comes to a head for Sofia and she finally comes out and tells the two of them that she was raped by her boss and lost her job as a result.

This was clearly a difficult thing for Sofia to disclose – after spending the last 3 days avoiding the topic, leaving for work as normal only to sit in the park.

Episode 9 will look at how Fally and Amina will deal with the news, and how Karis will deal with getting dumped by his ‘Shuga Mama’.

Another explosive episode from Shuga Radio is about to hit the airwaves and we hope you’re as drummed up about it as we are !

Source: http://mtvshuga.com/2012/08/shuga-radio-episode-7-preview/

In the previous episode Karis’ life seemed to take an unexpected turn as he ‘rescued’ Riziki, an older woman who was having car trouble by the side of the road. She even went ahead to offer him a job and improve his life, all for his ‘company’. This week we’ll get to see how things play out for him in his new relationship.

Amina is getting to know her way around the city, though she had to learn it the hard way by getting lost at first. She’s been told to be wary of the crowd she gets mixed up in and it will be interesting to see how long she can stay out of trouble and whether she makes the right choices.

The hotel manager at Sofia’s workplace is still not giving up on trying to get Sofia and this may prove to make things difficult for her in the workplace.

Unprotected sex, ‘shuga mamas’ and pushy bosses… have a read of the Shuga Radio Episode 6 review

Source: http://mtvshuga.com/2012/08/shuga-radio-episode-6-reviewed/

That must have been the toughest decision Sofia had to make thus far as her childhood sweetheart, Fally, convinced her to take their relationship to the next level and make it ‘special’.

‘I’ve been a good boy and I’m sure you’ve been a good girl too!’ Fally seductively told Sofia as they finally got time alone having sent her cousin Amina to the market. Fally didn’t want to waste the opportunity as they finally had some time to themselves. Sofia had initially insisted that they use a condom, just like their counselor had told them but Fally sought to wipe away all her worries and fears by reassuring her and Sofia gave in.

Meanwhile Amina got lost going to the market as she was sent by her cousin. With no idea of where to go in this big city of Kisumu and no one to call for directions, she ended up in a fish restaurant with a woman who was kind enough to help her.

‘Think girl, there must be someone you know or can get in touch with,’ the woman urged her. Amina remembered that she had the number of Karis, the boda boda operator and that he knew where she lived. The woman clearly knew the type of reputation Karis had earned, even calling him a wolf and told the young girl to be careful as she headed back with the ‘smooth operator’.

When Sofia reported to work, she was told not to interrupt her boss because he was ‘busy’ with another girl. The receptionist looked down on her because she didn’t want to oblige the hotel manager in order to get the nice things these other girls got. Sofia flatly declared that she did want to offer sex for money and that’s just the way it was.

Her boss was however determined to have her in his clutches as he told her she would be needed late that evening to ‘clean his office’. Sofia was stubborn and insisted that she would do it the following morning but as her manager would hear none of that, she ran away.

Meanwhile, Karis meets a more mature lady, Riziki who’s having some car trouble by the side of the road. He offers to help her and as usual charms the socks of the lady. He makes a call to his friend telling him of how he’s finally ‘hit the jackpot’ which could change his life.

So this week we’re asking a hard hitting question: Sofia and Fally have sex without a condom. Why is it so hard for Sofia to insist on using a condom with Fally?

Sofia’s cousin Amina has just arrived in Kisumu from the village and boy is she excited about all the city holds. Rather conveniently, it’s Karis and his boda boda that transport the two from the bus stop to the city center, all the while the ‘smooth operator’ is buttering up Amina.

What an episode that was!

Sofia’s cousin Amina has just arrived in Kisumu from the village and boy is she excited about all the city holds. Rather conveniently, it’s Karis and his boda boda that transport the two from the bus stop to the city center, all the while the ‘smooth operator’ is buttering up Amina.

This doesn’t sit down too well with Sofia though and she warns him to stay away from her 16 year old cousin. Later while they’re sipping on some refreshments at a café in town, Sofia opens up to her cousin about life in the city, going ahead to warn her of the men here.

‘The HIV rate here is extremely high!’ she whispers to Amina, telling her it would be better if she stayed indoors for now for her own safety, and away from the ‘men whom she can’t trust’.

With Amina’s arrival, Fally confronts his workmate Feruz and asks him where exactly everyone else at the truck depot gets their extra cash, because he’s noticed he’s the only one who misses out. Feruz hushes him and advises that there’s no need for him to get involved in the dastardly ways the rest of them get their cash.

Fally is desperate though and says that with Amina’s arrival, there’s now an extra mouth to feed and there’s no way he can cater to everyone’s needs on the money he makes off his music. We’ll see how this affects his life soon though.

The best part though is the fact that Sofia and Fally decide to go and get tested. Before they are given their results however, they start talking about how far they have come and how many sexual partners they’ve had. Fally says though they’ve been quite a number, he made sure he was always careful… then the moment of truth arrives.

It’s that time again - #ShugaRadio Episode 5 is launching this week! Check out this preview of what to expect and listen to the promo below.

Source: http://mtvshuga.com/2012/07/shuga-radio-episode-5-preview/

Hey Shuga Family! We’re so glad that Episode 5 is about to hit the airwaves, the responses we got last week are really revving us up. It’s going to be another exciting week of finding out how the lives and loves of our #ShugaRadio characters pan out. Sofia made a decision that could change the ball game for her in her workplace considering that she declined the money and the ‘favours’ her manager was offering. In this episode we will get to find out whether there’s an evident change in the way the hotel boss treats her.

Sofia’s mother has also been worried about her daughter and voiced her idea of sending over Amina, her cousin to keep her company as well as possibly report back home. Of course Sofia wasn’t too happy about this but mum would hear nothing about it. How will this play out for the budding love she shares with Fally?

Speaking of Fally, he’s facing some of his own tough decisions and we wonder what options he’ll make concerning his job at the truck depot and the music he is evidently skilled at. Then there’s Karis and his Casanova tendencies: does (claiming to) play it safe guarantee him no consequences?

The manager then brought up the issue of the money that he had previously given Sofia. He demanded to know what she had done with it and fully expected that she had already used it all up. His hope was to use that as leverage to make her give him sexual favours.

We’re loving your response to #ShugaRadio! There are so many difficult decisions being made as we delve deeper and deeper into our character’s lives…

That was it! Things are really heating up on the fourth episode of #ShugaRadio is as the tough decisions our characters are making begin to affect their lives in different ways.

The hotel manager’s true intentions with Sofia really came out when he decided he had dangled the carrot long enough in front of who he thought was a desperate village girl. Since he felt that he had done a lot to help her, he thought it was about time that Sofia showed him her appreciation. He tried to force Sofia to get sexually intimate with him but she flatly declined.

The manager then brought up the issue of the money that he had previously given Sofia. He demanded to know what she had done with it and fully expected that she had already used it all up. His hope was to use that as leverage to make her give him sexual favours.

Unfortunately for him, Sofia still had every single cent and gave it back. She thanked him for the opportunity and walked out.

Sofia called home to speak to her mother who dropped a bomb on her. Amina, Sofia’s 16-year old cousin, was being sent over to help her out in Kisumu. Sofia’s mother felt that the pressures of the city were weighing down heavy on her daughter and that perhaps having her cousin around would help ward off the loneliness.

Sofia was very reluctant to receive this news – not only does she not have a place of her own but she felt that the added responsibility of looking after her cousin would be too taxing.

Karis on the other hand has been living life care free! His friends pointed out the fact that by sleeping around with many women, he is living life carelessly but he brushed them off and claimed to be more careful than he seems. Do you think he really is?

After an electric Shuga Radio Episode 3 – here’s a preview of what you can expect fro Episode 4 this week…

You know what time it is again Shuga family… Sofia and Fally are back on #ShugaRadio this week and we’re about to find out whether the decisions they made in the previous episodes were the right ones and what the consequences could be.

Sofia’s new boss was a little too flirty with her for comfort and being from the village, she was a bit naive as to what the hotel manager was suggesting, though maybe that was because she was desperate for the job. After all her boyfriend’s love for music didn’t sit down too well with her.

In the next episode we’ll get to find out just what she does with the money her manager gives her and whether or not her actions come with a price tag.

Karis has just met Riziki and with the reputation he has with the women of Kisumu, married or single, his friends chide him on just what his intentions are.

The third episode of #ShugaRadio really set the stage for the events which will follow throughout the series as each of our characters had difficult choices to make and which would ultimately influence and affect the course of their lives.

After a minor accident at the truck depot, Feruz and Fally find out that their job might be a cover-up for something illegal. They knew it was a transportation business but discovering illegal substances in transit was not a part of the job description. They are conveniently asked to forget what they saw and not ask any questions. What would you have done?

Things are looking up for Sofia who finally got to see the manager of the hotel she went to look for a job at, but despite her earnest efforts, it seems the man has ulterior motives.

‘Why don’t you wear a tighter skirt… and unbutton the first three on your blouse’ he told her, asking Sofia to shake off her ‘village’ roots and get with how things work in the city. Sweet innocent Sofia is perplexed as to the demands as she is even given an allowance to go and update her wardrobe. In a subsequent conversation with the receptionist, Sharon, she vehemently swears not to give her new boss any favours but Sharon has seen it all before, insisting; ‘they all say that… at first.’

Fally’s friend Karis meanwhile picks up an older and wealthier lady, Riziki and swiftly charms her out of her wits. He doesn’t waste any time with getting acquainted and makes her an offer she doesn’t want to refuse. She asks him if he ‘plays it safe’ and he says it’s the only way he knows how.

So that was the second episode Shuga Radio: Love Sex and Money where Sofia seems to be getting to know her way around the hustling and bustling city of Kisumu.

Sofia has come to realize it’s not all as rosy as she had expected back when she was in the village dreaming about being reunited with her long lost love Fally. It seems that the 19-year old had nothing short of big dreams and her fantasies just weren’t becoming a reality as she woke up after the first night in Fally’s house. Furthermore, Fally telling her that he was banking not just his but their future on his musical dreams did not sit down too well with Sofia. She was convinced that he would go nowhere if he held on to his ‘childish’ dreams.

Sofia wanted more than she was getting but because she had feelings for him, being content was the best option though she went out to try her luck at finding a job, not having any qualifications but her knowledge of sewing. This desire leads her to a hotel in the city center where she’s thankfully given hope by the secretary that she should come back on Friday.

Meanwhile Fally had a conversation with his close friend Feruz at the truck depot where they worked. Feruz was inquiring about the new lady of his house (Sofia) and exactly what kind of relationship they were having because it was evident a lot more was going on. Fally tried to brush aside the topic but his friend insisted that if since they were living together and you never know what would happen, the two should get tested for HIV.

Sofia makes a call home to her mother, updating her on the sophistication of the city and its dwellers but leaving out a lot of stuff that’s going on in her life. Her stammering leaves her mother with a lot of question marks as to what really is going on since her daughter left for the city but she encourages her daughter to stay safe and take care of herself.

It is apparent that Sofia and Fally have been reunited after a very long time. Feruz advices Fally that the two should go get tested for HIV. Do you think they should?

If you love the new Shuga Radio series which has got everyone talking then; we know you’ve been waiting to find out just what will happen to Sofia after she left the quiet cocoon of her parent’s home and the small village for the promise which she hoped the big lakeside city of Kisumu would hold, as well as the love of her sweetheart Fally.

Once Sofia made it to the city, she was taken aback by how different things were: everyone was busier and ruder but thank goodness she managed to find one of Fally’s friends, smooth talking Karis, in the market. He was able to direct her to where she wanted to go to find Fally.

Episode 2 takes a look at whether or not her dreams did come true and how the now, after years of not seeing each other, the reunited couple begin to carve out a life for themselves.

Hey Shuga fam, we hope you loved the first episode of #ShugaRadio and enjoyed meeting sweet Sofia, Fally and Karis.

If you missed it, we have the link at the bottom of this post...

First up, Sofia clearly lied to her parents about what was motivating her to leave her village… and they let her go. When your parents show faith in you by giving you a little space to do what you want, should we feel obligated to do what’s right? How would you have expressed your feelings to your parents if you were Sofia?

Sofia met Karis, a boda-boda or motorbike taxi driver who talks non-stop. He happily took her to Fally’s place but Sofia seems a little disappointed to discover how Fally is living. What do you think about Karis?

At work, knowing his friend was going to meet up with Sofia after a long time, Fally’s best friend Feruz reminds him to use condoms. As friends, do you look out for each other? Does the crowd you’re around encourage you to be responsible?

Ahead of launching the first episode of the brand new #ShugaRadio series – here’s a preview of what to expect…

As Shuga Radio kicks off today, we would like to introduce you to 19 year old Sofia. She’s a beautiful girl in a small village on the outskirts of Kisumu with big dreams of finding a well-paying job and reuniting with her childhood sweetheart Fally in the big city.

Sofia’s parents are however strict and very protective of their only daughter, so in order to make her dream trip Sofia blatantly lies to them that she already has a job offer in the city.

Will Sofia’s parents let her go? If she manages to go, how will she handle the change of pace in the big city as well as the possibility of meeting Fally again? What precautions do you think Sofia should take?

You’ll have to tune in later to find out. The episode will be going live in the Swag Media section of the MTV Shuga blog today at 19:30 EAT
